Instrumentation Engineer or Senior Instrumentation Technologist

Salary $110 - 140K/year

Location - Alberta (travel within Canada required occasionally)

Job Description:

Our client is recruiting a senior instrumentation engineer or senior instrumentation technologist to design their Energy Management Information System package. Currently, they have a software application that can use electricity and natural gas consumption data as well as other variables such as outdoor air temperature, pressure, temperature, flow rates, production etc. of different boundaries, frequencies and start/end date to develop an energy model and determine which variables are impacting energy usage. The software also provides analytics and reporting on energy usage. They would like to integrate hardware to add the data capture and control functionality. Data capture should be sent to a central gateway/hub first that is installed in the facility before being transmitted to our cloud software solution.

Our client is looking for a senior instrumentation engineer to do the following:

  • Research, review, recommend and specify instrumentation components such as sensors, meters, controllers, transmitters and data gateways.

  • Review existing industrial client energy management information systems and recommend improvements based on their scope, budget and timeline including cost-benefit analysis and feasibility studies. The review should include how to best leverage what the client already has installed to improve energy tracking, reporting and control.

  • Provide input into energy analytics and reporting software improvements based on personal and client feedback

  • Test and commission the hardware and system integration components at industrial client facilities

  • Support ongoing energy and other data capture and energy management information system performance

  • Develop schematics, diagrams and layouts using CAD software

  • Develop and review single line diagrams (SLD), process flow diagrams (PFD) and piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&ID) based on on-site visit findings and review of other documents

  • Review and approve instrumentation and control system design documents including specifications, drawings and calculations

  • Ensure projects are finished on schedule and budget working together with the rest of the engineering team, project team and clients.

  • Develop and present technical reports and presentations to clients, stakeholders and internal team members

  • Ensure that instrumentation and control systems are designed and installed in compliance with applicable codes, standards and regulations

  • Continually update knowledge and keep informed of new developed in the field of instrumentation and control systems and energy management information systems

  • Provide technical guidance and support to team members

  • Contribute to corporate business development and client-specific projects

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering, or a related field

  • 5+ years of experience in instrumentation and control system design, analysis, and implementation

  • Proficiency in reading SLDs, PFDs and P&IDs.

  • Proficiency in using CAD to design control systems

  • Experience with control system programming and software tools. Examples include PLC programming, DCS programming, or SCADA systems

  • Knowledge of codes, standards, and regulations related to instrumentation and control systems, such as ISA, IEC, and NEC

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills

  • Strong communication (speaking, writing) and interpersonal skills

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team

  • Experience with industrial processes and equipment, such as pumps, motors, and valves, is a plus

  • Experience with energy management concepts is a plus.

  • Professional Engineering (PE) license is a plus
